Not one property but three separated divisions — Issaqueena in the north, Todds Creek in the middle, and Fant’s Grove on the far side of Lake Hartwell — because the Army Corps’ reservoir drowned roughly 8,000 acres of the original purchase and cut what was left in half. Almost every kilometre of that edge is either shoreline or somebody’s back yard.

A working forest, not a wilderness — USGS PAD-US records it GAP 3: protected from conversion, with extractive use permitted. It is harvested, thinned and prescribe-burned on purpose.

Bought to repair it — nearly 30,000 acres of exhausted farmland purchased under the New Deal, principally the Bankhead-Jones Farm Tenant Act; WPA reclamation from 1934, Clemson supervision from 1939, deeded to the college in 1954.

Clemson’s claim — the largest university-managed forest contiguous with its own campus in the United States. No independent register of university forest areas was found against which to test it, so it is carried as Clemson’s statement rather than asserted here.

More than 100 miles of trails and more than 100 miles of shoreline; 37 classes teach in it.

Why this forest matters beyond South Carolina

It is the experiment, not the control. Most protected land is valued for what was never done to it. This forest is the opposite: by the early twentieth century as much as nine inches of topsoil had washed off these cotton fields, and what stands here now grew back on the subsoil. It is a ninety-year record of whether ruined Piedmont farmland can be made into forest again, and it is one of very few places where somebody was measuring the whole time.

Diversity on recovered ground. A checklist built from six decades of herbarium specimens puts roughly 1,200 vascular plant species here, including 44 rare species tracked by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and 17 more recommended for tracking. Three were newly verified in 2024. In October 2024 Clemson’s trustees designated 3,265 acres an ecologically sensitive zone.

A forest with a town inside it. The property wraps a university campus and touches Clemson, Seneca, Central and Pendleton. That is why box turtles here are studied along a gradient from subdivisions to unbroken woods, why road mortality is a live question, and why 3,265 acres had to be designated as sensitive at all.

An invasion in progress. Wild pigs have been in this region since at least 1982 and in the forest for at least a decade, and eleven collared adults each worked only about 2.3 km² a month — concentrated disturbance rather than dispersed. What it is costing this forest has not been measured, and that gap is stated on the page rather than filled from studies done elsewhere.

Perimeter and compactness are computed from the drawn rings and are scale-dependent; a lake-shore boundary is genuinely this convoluted, which is why compactness is so low. Elevation is our own measurement of the USGS 3DEP raster this site ships, masked to the rings and taken after resampling — it agrees closely with the 650–1,000 ft range that circulates without a survey attached.
